ABOUT THE ARTIST

My name is Rae Salazar :) I'm a 24 y/o self-taught, queer, latina, multimedia artist based in Richmond, VA.

I started art by tracing Pokemon cards at 6 years old with my cousins at the family functions. I continued tracing animals and then slowly progressed to free-handed drawings. I took art classes all throughout my school career, but it wasn't until high school that I began painting seriously, and then college even more so.

I have a bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and Psychology with no plans to use it.

Well, maybe one day as an art therapist but, I'm happy with free lance work for now :) In Summer of 2024 I quit my jobs as a behavioral therapist and a server to pursue a life as a full time artist and have felt so much more fulfilled ever since. It hasn't been easy, especially financially, but my work and my lifestyle bring me joy for the first time in my life.

I don't like to limit myself and am always looking to learn new mediums, but painting, jewelry, and collages are my main forms of expression. I also love drawing with oil & chalk pastels, all forms of mixed media, digital illustration, random crafts, and upcycling clothing every now and then. I would love to gain more experience in stained glass, ceramics, and textiles :)
